Helpful Hints

Theft Alert: Err on the side of caution. Don’t venture into neighborhoods that make you uncomfortable. Walk with confidence, as if you know where you’re going and what you’re doing. Assume able-bodied beggars are thieves.

Stick to busy streets and beware of gangs of hoodlums. A third of the city is unemployed, and past local governments have set an example that the Mafia would be proud of. Assume con artists are more clever than you. Any jostle or commotion is probably a thief-team smokescreen. To keep bags safe, it’s probably best to store them at Centrale Station.

Naples Experiences for Cruisers

While it boasts one of Europe’s best archaeological museums, Naples is one place that’s about experiences more than sightseeing. Here are a few suggestions for a “cultural scavenger hunt” of untouristy Naples, doable even with just a day in port.

Get lost in the tangled back lanes. Naples has some of the grittiest, most colorful street life this side of the developing world. Go for a stroll through a workaday neighborhood, noticing the balconies lining the walls of the urban canyon high above you. Wave at someone up high on a balcony; if they seem friendly, strike up a conversation.

Seek out a made-to-order sandwich. Step into a tiny grocery and communicate with the proprietor that you want him to make you a sandwich with his favorite meat, cheese, and garnish. Pay for it all by the weight...without getting overcharged.

Light a candle in a church. Naples has particularly powerful houses of worship (including some described on my self-guided walk, here). Visit one of these—or just drop into any neighborhood church—and light a candle.

Explore the fish market. If you’re here in the morning and want a look at colorful, workaday Naples, stroll through the lively (and smelly) Porta Nolana fish market. Listen to the droning sales pitches of the fishmongers, perfected over centuries.
